A CONCEPT OF
JIHAD
A FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR ALL THOSE WHO CARE TO CONTEMPLATE
1. Literally, Jihad means striving, and is incumbent on every living creature in this universe. It incorporates the whole chain of activities indispensable for upright existence and respectable living. All creatures other than the humans perform it as an ingredient of their nature. Human beings have an option. In their case, they may undertake it as deemed fit or may out rightly ignore it. However, the failure to undertake Jihad results in miseries for self and the entire people.
2. In Islam, Jihad is a very basic teaching and the most important aspect of the life of a Muslim individually as well as collectively. Somehow, it has become known that Jihad is only a sword wielding display of violent behavior in the name of Islam. Ostensibly it may be so, because display and use of force against the friends of devil for the cause of Allah and Allah alone is the most visible form of Jihad. However, this has been termed by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a smaller kind of Jihad [JEHAD-E-ASGHAR]. The bigger Jihad [JEHAD-E-AKBAR] is to remain on the straight path [SIRAT-E-MUSTAQEEM] in all matters of human action and behavior while living in a community and also striving to see to it that the others are guided/allowed to do the same. This form of Jihad is mostly not very often seen by everyone because of the nature and the form in which it is undertaken and therefore, the misunderstanding. All humans living in this world will certainly gain in all aspects of worldly life (and also in the life of hereafter) if they adhere to the teachings of Allah and His prophet pertaining to Jihad. They have only to understand these in the correct perspective with the right frame of mind.
3. JIHAD as a word and as a concept has been befuddled and misrepresented by the non-Muslims and the Muslims alike. Some Muslims consider it an authorization to bring despondency to the humans while the hidebound non-Muslims use this word to communicate their historical detestation towards the Muslims. Both attitudes are consequent to being rapt in ignorance, misunderstanding and the personal pursuits of some in the past. This very obviously, is not good enough. Today's intellectuals, especially in the western world, are faced with a serious handicap in so far as understanding of Jihad with reference to the Qur'an is concerned. They commonly understand Jihad with reference to history and seldom with regard to the Qur'an, the mainstay of Islamic edifice. Speaking in the context of whole world, it needs to be understood that those who have read, really understood and truly practiced the Qur’an are today obscured in the miasma of prejudice and historic records. There is, therefore, a dire need to turn to the Qur’an for guidance in this so very important aspect of our lives these days.
4. In today’s Muslim world Jihad is generally understood to be the domain of segmented and self proclaimed custodians of Islamic ideology and the society irrespective of what the government of the country thinks or says about it. In this regard it is often forgotten as to what Allah proclaimed in the Qur’an and what was said and practiced by the Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] while enforcing the Qura’nic wisdom on Jihad. In the early days of Holy Prophet’s life in Arabia he only allowed his followers to defend against or take up arms when permitted by Almighty Allah to do so in spite of all the humiliating punishments meted out to the believers. Once permitted by Allah, the followers of the Holy Prophet on confronting the enemy in battlefield began actual fighting only when allowed by the Prophet Muhammad [PBUH]. No one ever dared to start combating without explicit permission of the Prophet. It stands to logic as well as the former attitude will only help dissensions and divisions as against concord and cohesion.
5. In this article an effort has been made to break away from the existing predicament and focus only on the teachings of Allah Almighty on the subject of Jihad as read and understood from the Qur’an by the author. The conclusions may not be to some ones liking. It is however, requested that these may kindly be tested on the scale of astuteness and awareness instead of self-interest and chauvinism.
6. Before venturing to answer the subject matter question (IS JIHAD FOR THE FOLLOWER OF THE QUR’AN ONLY?), it is only normal that we comprehend the PURPOSE or object of JIHAD as spelled out in the Qur’an itself. In this context having deliberated on various verses of the Qur’an following is inferred:-
a. Jihad is to save the earth from utter corruption, mischief, mayhem, oppression, confusion or disorder (FITNA and FASAD-I-KABBIR). [2:251 & 8:73][1]. All actions taken in the name of Jihad are to be only and only for the cause of Allah [4:76][2] aiming to put an end to persecution of humans and restoring justice and the faith in Allah. [8:39 ][3]. Allah has promised many gains to those who undertake Jihad for His cause [48:19-21][4] but acquiring temporal gains only, must not serve as a guide for undertaking Jihad. If it were so then it will be classified as mischief (FASAD) and certainly not striving in Allah’s cause (JIHAD). [3:152][5]
b. Jihad is also to rescue the old men, women and children praying for deliverance from oppression [4:75][6]. In an eventuality where one is unable to live an honourable and decent life one is required to migrate from such territories [3:195; 4:97; 8:72; 16:41][7] and in case it is not possible due to reasons beyond ones control then Jihad is to be initiated by those who are responsible enough and also have the means to do so on the express request of the oppressed ones [4:75]. It is so to avoid giving a chance to those wicked ones who may attack foreign lands in the garb of mercenaries in the name of Jihad.
c. Jihad is to avoid destruction of the places of Allah’s worship (May those be of the followers of any revealed scripture) and to restore peace so that the servants of Allah may worship Him with complete devotion and peace of mind. [22:40-41][8]. This will only be possible when the believers in revealed scriptures are united, strong enough and also determined to help their souls by ensuring freedom of Allah’s worship.
7. Realization of the purpose or objects of Jihad is to be made in the following scenario:-
b. Significance of peace is emphasized comprehensively [5:15 -16; 10:25 -26; 14:35 ; 36:58; 59:23][10].
c. Humans are asked to initiate all possible measures to establish or restore peace for the sake of Allah while exercising utmost restraint from resorting to taking up arms unnecessarily [2:191-192 & 217; 5:2 & 64; 42:43; 48:24-25][11].
d. Mischief making is declared as waging war on Allah and His Messenger and is to be punished severely; however the door of repentance remains open for them before they are overpowered [5:33-34; 7:56][12].
8. Retaliation is allowed by Allah Almighty in the backdrop of above scenario only within the given parameters as under:-
b. Defending (taking up arms) is permitted only when you have been wronged or attacked while still keeping the element of pardon in mind [42:40-42][14]. It must be remembered that you can pardon only if you are powerful enough to inflict the desired and also required punishment on the offender otherwise it will be fear and fault.
c. Attack with conventional forces is to be retaliated with conventional forces only. Unnecessary damages are to be avoided while keeping the observance of duty to Allah the foremost [2:194][15].
d. Inflicting punishment on the individual attacker is allowed only equal to what the attacker has inflicted while still remaining inclined to mercy [5:45 ][16].
e. Jihad once initiated must culminate in achieving the desired results [2:193 & 47:4][17] and must also deter the helpers and the protectors of those against whom it has been launched. [48:22][18]
9. Some very important aspects of Jihad are:-
a. Being strong enough to take hold of the goal of Jihad that is establishing or re-establishing justice and faith in Allah. [2:193][19]
b. Waging struggle (ranging from words of mouth to taking up arms) against the friends of devil [4:76][20] who resort to fighting to fulfill their nefarious designs.
c. Undertaking killing against those hypocrites who indulge in incitement to rebellion and join hands with the attackers. [4:91][21].
d. Fighting against the ones who indulge in violation of their concluded treaties by attacking the religion and the believers [9:12 -13][22].
e. Conducting Jihad against those from amongst the People of the Book who do not believe in Allah and in the Last Day and act against what Allah has desired [9:29 ][23].
f. Striving against the polytheists, unbelievers & the hypocrites collectively and sternly [9:36 & 9:73; 66:9][24].
h. Motivating believers to spend their possessions [2:195, 245, 261; 3:180; 8:2-4; 9:34-35 & 111][26] and sacrifice their self for the genuine success in and of life [3:169-171][27]. Life over here implies that of this world and that of the hereafter. Believers are also reminded that in case they avoid Jihad they will face grievous consequence and others will take their place [9:39 ][28].
i. Ensuring moral training of Mujahids and their ethical ascendancy over the potential adversary [4:74][29].
j. Achieving self-sufficiency in making war materials and ensuring that Preparations of Jihad are of such an order that the enemies of ALLAH do not even think of venturing to harm the believers [27:33; 47:4; 57:25][30]. Deterrence is the comer stone of Qura’nic Defense Strategy [4:89; 8:57 ; 8:60; 48:22-23][31].
k. Guarding your secrets and dealing aggressively with those who divulge national secrets. [12:77; 15:18 ][32]. Matters of public security must be handled with extra care and only concerned people taken in to confidence [4:83][33].
l. Beware of intelligence gathering and of posing security threat to the believers by the enemy through individuals having pleasing exteriors, who are good at talking and also the family members [63:4; 64:14][34].
m. Obeying a commander in battle even at the risk of your life [48:18][35]. Field commanders must pay due attention to the following:-
(1) Having strong faith in Allah with total submission to Him and seeking His help praying fervently [2:153; 3:13 ; 5:11 ; 8:43 -46; 33:22][36].
(2) Well-coordinated and boldly conducted maneuvers and vigorous and aggressive use of small team operations may avert misfortunes. [3:172-175; 9:5 & 25; 33:14; 100:1-5][37]
(3) Threatening the vulnerable areas of enemy will yield good strategic results. [9:120-122][38]
(4) Be always and every time prepared to meet offensive action by your sworn enemy. [4:71 & 101-103][39]
(5) Complete knowledge about the enemy and use of wisdom in executing operational plans [48:18][40].
(6) Mastery in use of the forces of nature [48:3-4][41].
(7) Never compromise on the standards of selecting soldiers. [4:74][42]
(8) Soldiers must not develop love of booty, as seeking spoils of war is not liked, although allowed by Allah. Promise of rich booty and other gains is a motivating factor in Jihad for those soldiers who are of weak resolve in Jihad. Fear of Allah and obedience to His Apostle should remain the basic factor while talking of or carrying out the distribution of the spoils of war. [3:152; 8:67-71; 48:15-16 & 20-21; 8:1 & 41][43]
(9) Remaining steadfast under adverse situations and avoiding internal disputes. [3:139 &200; 4:59 ][44]
(10) Striving valiantly while remaining God fearing. [5:35 ][45]
(11) Deployment of forces for battle must receive commander's personal attention. [3:121][46]
n. Ensuring offering of prayers is never forgotten, even if you are in thick of the battle. Also seeing to it that required protective measures are adopted while offering prayers [4:101-103][47] and during the combat especially in case of atomic warfare [16:81][48].
o. Understanding that philosophy and form of Allah’s help are message of hope and assurance to the hearts. Allah’s help is for those who help Him, fight for His cause, fear Him with complete trust and do not become enraged. [3:13 & 121-127; 47:7-9][49]
10. From the above it appears that the believers in Allah are the central theme in the scheme of Jihad. Having grasped the essentials of what has been stated in the above paragraphs, it can be fairly assumed that the readers are now sufficiently equipped to comprehend as to who are those believers that are tasked by Allah to embark on Jihad? But before nearing any conclusions in this regard it will be pertinent that we go through the following verses of Qur’an as well:-
5:2. O ye who believe ['AAMANO]! Profane not Allah's monuments nor the Sacred Month nor the offerings nor the garlands, nor those repairing to the Sacred House, seeking the grace and pleasure of Allah. But when ye have left the sacred territory, then go hunting (if ye will). And let not your hatred of a folk who (once) stopped your going to the Inviolable Place of Worship seduce you to transgress; but help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is severe in punishment.
Al-Maidah
9:111. Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers [MU'MINEN] their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain. It is a promise, which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. Who fulfilleth His covenant better than Allah? Rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made, for that is the supreme triumph.
9:112. (Triumphant) are those who turn repentant (to Allah), those who serve (Him), those who praise (Him), those who fast [SAA'IH.ON], those who bow down, those who fall prostrate (in worship), those who enjoin the right and who forbid the wrong and those who keep the limits (ordained) of Allah And give glad tidings to believers [MU'MINEN]!
At-Touba
22:39. Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory;
22:40. Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is Allah. For had it not been for Allah's repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down. Verily Allah helpeth one who helpeth Him. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.
22:77. O you who believe ['AAMANO]! bow down and prostrate yourselves and serve your Lord, and do good that you may succeed [LAcALLA -KUM TUFLIH.ON].
22:78. And strive for Allah with the endeavor which is His right. He hath chosen you and hath not laid upon you in religion any hardship; the faith of your father Abraham (is yours). He hath named you Muslims of old time and in this (Scripture), that the messenger may be a witness against you, and that ye may be witnesses against mankind. So establish worship, pay the poor due, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protecting Friend. A blessed Patron and a blessed Helper!
Al-Hajj

29:45. Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.
29:
46. And argue not [WA- LAA TUJAADILO] with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better ['ILLAA BI- 'ALLATE HIYA AH.SAN], save with such of them as do wrong [Z.ALAMO]; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender.

29:
47. In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny our revelations save the disbelievers [KAAFIRON].

11. Contemplating over the ten verses of the Holy Qur’an mentioned above, after having taken hold of the essentials of paras ante of this writing, one may take to mean these (in addition to so many other aspects pertaining to human life) as under:-
a. The last portion of Verse 2 of Al-Maidah makes it known that Allah permits NO transgression on account of religious divergence or difference of opinion. On encountering such a situation believers are advised to suspend the arguments in a fair manner and wait for ultimate judgment by Allah Almighty. Under the circumstances the believers are, however asked to help one another in decency and pious work as against indulging in heated discussions leading to disruption of peace in society. This helps to conclude that religious differences or irritants are not desired by Allah to become cause of confrontation or fighting. Such fighting will never qualify as Jihad.
b. Believers who are ultimately compelled by the friends of devil to undertake fighting in the way of Allah are promised Paradise in the Verse 111 of At-Touba in return of their lives and their wealth. The believers being talked about in this verse are the ones who are identified as such in the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur’an. It is, therefore, a very safe conclusion from this verse that such believers are not expected to indulge in infighting rather they are desired to undertake Jihad in the cause of Allah together and united so that they may qualify for the supreme triumph. The qualities of such triumphant believers enumerated in verse 112 of At-Touba are given out in all the Heavenly Books i.e. the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur’an.
c. The instructions contained in verses 39 & 40 of Al-Hajj grant Allah’s permission to those who have been wronged (attacked and expelled from their homes on account of believing in Allah) of undertaking fighting. One of the objects of allowing fighting or resorting to Jihad is that the places where Allah’s name is mentioned (Cloisters and Churches and Oratories and Mosques) do not get pulled down. The message over here appears to be that Allah desires of the believers that undertake His remembrance in all these places of His worship to fight the destructionists of peace and His worship together and united for His cause. Jihad therefore is ordained against all those who are bent to put an end to Allah’s remembrance in various places of His worship. This task is to be executed by all those who mention Allah’s name may be in a Cloister, a Church, an Oratory or a Mosque. They all should, therefore, get united to embark on Jihad against the friends of devil.
d. Verses 77 and 78 of Al-Hajj contain the message of unity for all those who claim to follow the teachings of Prophet Abraham [PBUH]. This unity of thought and belief has to be translated in to striving (conducting Jihad) for Allah with the endeavor worthy of His right. It is very well known that all people of the Book believe in Prophet Abraham [PBUH] and should therefore get united in both the thought and action to undertake Jihad for Allah’s cause against all those who aim at disrupting world peace AGAINST THE WISHES OF PROPHET ABRAHAM [PBUH].
e. Verse 46 of Al-Ankaboot mentions in very clear terms that the followers of the Qur’an are not to indulge in argumentation, confrontation or fighting with the People of the Book. There are only two exceptions to this. One; that it may be in a better way (AH.SAN) and two; it may be only against those who from amongst the People of the Book indulge in doing wrong. The second exception is clearer but the first one needs elaboration. AH.SAN is the superlative degree of ‘good’ in Arabic. Here it could imply firstly; possessing and using the best of the means of arguing or if needed fighting and secondly; the utilization of the host of other best ways of tackling the impending issue or issues. The first implication (with the exception of arguing only) appears to be out of context when viewed in the light of the proceeding and the preceding verses. There can be no denial from resorting to the other best way or ways of tackling the issue which as mentioned in these verses is reciting the Scripture and remembering Allah that is to say reasoning out your viewpoint in the light of the revealed Scriptures while having the fear of Almighty Allah. In this context, however, it must be remembered (as mentioned earlier) that this relaxation is not valid in case of those who from amongst the People of The Book indulge in doing wrong or who are ‘ZALAM’ because in case a wrong doer is not checked he is likely to indulge in more and more excesses to humanity.
12. From the above discussion and the deliberations in the light of the Qura’nic verses referred to in the write up following may be concluded as an answer to the titled question of this paper:-
a. Followers of the Torah, the Gospel and the Qur’an are desired by Allah Almighty to get united and act against the evil forces operating on the earth aiming at disrupting its peace and harmony. Establishing peace is therefore the common ground amongst the followers of all these Heavenly Books.
b. Jihad is a Divine responsibility of all those humans who claim to be following any of the revealed Scriptures. It is not, as is commonly perceived, the assignment or the responsibility of the followers of the Qur’an only and no one else.
13. Above conclusions imply the following:-
a. Followers of the revealed scriptures respect all other revealed scriptures without any misgivings and reservations of any kind.
b. They have not only academically learnt to live in peace with others but have also arrived at a consensus as to the modalities of peaceful co-existence based on the common grounds promulgated in their revealed scriptures.
c. There exists a forum that is powerful enough to settle all disputes arising amongst the believers of various revealed scriptures and indeed all humans.
d. All matters are to be discussed and decided at the above mentioned forum in a perfect democratic manner.
e. A mechanism has been evolved and placed on ground to coordinate and control all activities pertaining Jihad.
14. These implications need to be studied in detail and road maps evolved to put the same to practice. For this purpose a wing may be created at Islamic International University or any other appropriate seminary to study, evaluate and coordinate all academic activities resulting in a unified work plan. It may then be presented at an appropriate forum of Ummah for further maturing before placing it at a world forum for agreeing to its adoption and implementation. All this work and the process involved seem to be colossal and circuitous but are worth the outcome that is peace all around.

[1] By Allah's will they routed them: and David slew Goliath: and Allah gave him Power and Wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: but Allah is full of bounty to all the worlds. 2:251
The Unbelievers are protectors, one of another: unless ye do this, (protect each other), there would be tumult and oppression on earth, and great mischief. 8:73
[2] Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith fight in the cause of Evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.
[3] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevails justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do. 8:39
[4] And many gains will they acquire (besides): and Allah is Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom. Allah has promised you many gains that ye shall acquire, and He has given you these beforehand; and He has restrained the hands of men from you; that it may be a Sign for the Believers, and that He may guide you to a Straight Path; And other gains (there are), which are not within your power, but which Allah has compassed: and Allah has power over all things. 48:19-21
[5] Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission were about to annihilate your enemy, until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the Booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you. But He forgave you: for Allah is full of grace to those who believe. 3:152
[6] And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help! 4:75
[7] And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: ye are members, one of another; those who have left their homes, and were driven out therefrom, and suffered harm in My Cause, and fought and were slain, verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath - a reward from the Presence of Allah - and from His Presence is the best of rewards." 3:195
When angels take the souls of those who die in sin against their souls, they say: "In what (plight) were ye?" They reply: "Weak and oppressed were we in the earth." They say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to move yourselves away (from evil)?" Such men will find their abode in Hell, what an evil refuge! 4:97
Those who believed, and adopted exile, and fought for the Faith, with their property and their persons, in the cause of Allah, as well as those who gave (them) asylum and aid, these are (all) friends and protectors, one of another. As to those who believed but came not into exile; ye owe no duty of protection to them until they come into exile; but if they seek your aid in religion, it is your duty to help them, except against a people with whom ye have a treaty of mutual alliance. And (remember) Allah Seeth all that ye do. 8:72
To those who leave their homes in the cause of Allah, after suffering oppression, We will assuredly give a goodly home in this world: but truly the reward of the Hereafter will be greater. If they only realised (this)! 16:41
[8] (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, "Our Lord is Allah." Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid His (cause); for verily Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). (They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs. 22:40-41
[9] On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our Messengers with Clear Signs, Yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. 5:32
Say: "Come, I will rehearse what Allah hath (really) prohibited you from": join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; kill not your children on a plea of want - We provide sustenance for you and for them - come not nigh to shameful deeds, whether open or secret; take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus doth He command you, that ye may learn wisdom. 6:151
[10] O People of the Book! there hath come to you Our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary): There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book. Wherewith Allah guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety, and leadeth them out of darkness, by His Will, unto the light, guideth them to a Path that is Straight. 5:15-16
But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a Way that is straight. To those who do right is a goodly (reward) yea, more (than in measure)! no darkness nor shame shall cover their faces! they are Companions of the Garden; they will abide therein (for aye)! 10:25-26
Remember Abraham said: "O my Lord! make this city one of peace and security: and preserve me and my sons from worshipping idols. 14:35
"Peace!" a Word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful! 36:58
Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god; the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah! (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him. 59:23
[11] And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 2:191-192
They ask thee concerning fighting in the Prohibited Month. Say: "Fighting therein is a grave (offence); but graver is it in the sight of Allah to prevent access to the path of Allah, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members." Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be Companions of the Fire and will abide therein. 2:217
O ye who believe! violate not the sanctity of the Symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the Sacred House, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the Sacred Precincts and of pilgrim grab, ye may hunt, and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment. 5:2
The Jews say: "Allah's hand is tied up." Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for the (blasphemy) they utter. Nay both His hands are widely outstretched: He giveth and spendeth (of His bounty) as He pleaseth. But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. Amongst them We have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment. Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief. 5:64
But indeed if any show patience and forgive, that would truly be an exercise of courageous will and resolution in the conduct of affairs. 42:43
And it is He Who has restrained their hands from you and your hands from them in the midst of Mecca , after that He gave you the victory over them. And Allah sees well all that ye do. They are the ones who denied revelation and hindered you from the Sacred Mosque and the sacrificial animals, detained from reaching their place of sacrifice. Had there not been believing men and believing women whom ye did not know that ye were trampling down and on whose account a crime would have accrued to you without (your) knowledge, (Allah would have allowed you to force your way, but He held back your hands) that He may admit to His Mercy whom He will. If they had been apart, We should certainly have punished the Unbelievers among them with a grievous Punishment. 48:24-25
[12] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter; Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:33-34
Do no mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on Him with fear and longing (in your hearts): for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good. 7:56
[13] Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. 2:190
The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. 2:194
[14] The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree): but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah: for (Allah) loveth not those who do wrong. But indeed if any do help and defend themselves after a wrong (done) to them, against such there is no cause of blame. The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrong-doing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice: for such there will be a Penalty grievous. 42:40-42
[15] The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. 2:194
[16] We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) wrongdoers. 5:45
[17] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression. 2:193
Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; at length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost. 47:4
[18] If the Unbelievers should fight you, they would certainly turn their backs; then would they find neither protector nor helper. 48:22
[19] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression. 2:193
[20] Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith fight in the cause of Evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan. 4:76
[21] Others you will find that wish to gain your confidence as well as that of their people: every time they are sent back to temptation, they succumb thereto; if they withdraw not from you nor give you (guarantees) of peace besides restraining their hands, seize them and slay them wherever ye get them; in their case We have provided you with a clear argument against them. 4:91
[22] But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and taunt you for your Faith, fight ye the chiefs of Unfaith: for their oaths are nothing to them: that thus they may be restrained. Will ye not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and took the aggressive by being the first (to assault) you? Do ye fear them? Nay, it is Allah Whom ye should more justly fear, if ye believe! 9:12-13
[23] Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. 9:29
[24] The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve (in a year), so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred: that is the straight usage. So wrong not yourselves therein, and fight the Pagans all together as they fight you all together. But know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. 9:36
O Prophet! strive hard against the Unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell, an evil refuge indeed. 9:73
O Prophet! Strive hard against the Unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be firm against them. Their abode is Hell; an evil refuge (indeed). 66:9
[25] To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged; and verily, Allah is Most Powerful for their aid; (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, "Our Lord is Allah." Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid His (cause); for verily Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). 22:39-40
[26] And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good. 2:195
Who is he that will loan to Allah a beautiful loan, which Allah will double unto his credit and multiply many times? It is Allah that giveth (you) Want or Plenty, and to Him shall be your return. 2:245
The parable of those who spend their substance in the way of Allah is that of a grain of corn: it groweth seven ears, and each ear hath a hundred grains. Allah giveth manifold increase to whom He pleaseth: and Allah careth for all and He knoweth all things. 2:261
And let not those who covetously withhold of the gifts which Allah hath given them of His Grace, think that it is good for them: nay, it will be the worse for them; soon shall the things which they covetously withheld be tied to their necks like a twisted collar, on the Day of Judgment. To Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do. 3:180
For, Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His Signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord; Who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of the gifts We have given them for sustenance: Such in truth are the Believers: they have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance: 8:2-4
O ye who believe! There are indeed many among the priests and anchorites, who in falsehood devour the substance of men and hinder (them) from the Way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the Way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty. On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!" 9:34-35
Allah hath purchased of the Believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the Garden (of Paradise ): they fight in His Cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in Truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur-an: and who is more faithful to his Covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme. 9:111
[27]Think not of those who are slain in Allah's Way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the Presence of their Lord; They rejoice in the Bounty provided by Allah: and with regard to those left behind, who have not yet joined them (in their bliss), the (Martyrs) glory in the fact that on them is no fear, nor have they (cause to) grieve. They glory in the Grace and the Bounty from Allah, and in the fact that Allah suffereth not the reward of the Faithful to be lost (in the least). 3:169-171
[28] Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place; but Him ye would not harm in the least. For Allah hath power over all things. 9:39
[29] Let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, To him who fighteth in the cause of Allah - whether he is slain or gets victory - soon shall We give him a reward of great (value). 4:74
[30] They said: "We are endued with strength, and given to vehement war: but the command is with thee; so consider what thou wilt command." 27:33
We sent aforetime Our Messengers with Clear Signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that men may stand forth in justice; and We sent down Iron, in which is (material for) mighty war, as well as many benefits for mankind, that Allah may test who it is that will help, unseen, Him and His Messengers: for Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might (and able to enforce His Will). 57:25
[31] They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): so take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (from what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks. 4:89
If ye gain the mastery over them in war, disperse, with them, those who follow them, that they may remember. 8:57
Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom Allah doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the Cause of Allah, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly. 8:60
If the Unbelievers should fight you, they would certainly turn their backs; then would they find neither protector nor helper. (Such has been) the practice (approved) of Allah already in the past: no change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah. 48:22-23
[32] They said: "If he steals, there was a brother of his who did steal before (him)." But these things did Joseph keep locked in his heart, revealing not the secrets to them. He (simply) said (to himself): "Ye are the worse situated; and Allah knoweth best the truth of what ye assert!" 12:77
But any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see). 15:18
[33] When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they divulge it. If they had only referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have tested it from them (direct). Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have followed Satan. 4:83
[34] When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up, (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)! 63:4
O ye who believe! Truly, among your wives and your children are (some that are) enemies to yourselves: so beware of them! But if ye forgive and overlook, and cover up (their faults), verily Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 64:14
[35]Allah's Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory; 48:18
[36] O ye who believe! Seek help with patient Perseverance and Prayer: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere. 2:153
"There has already been for you a Sign in the two armies that met (in combat): one was fighting in the Cause of Allah, the other resisting Allah; these saw with their own eyes twice their number. But Allah doth support with His aid whom He pleaseth. In this is a warning for such as have eyes to see." 3:13
O ye who believe! call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you when certain men formed the design to stretch out their hands against you, but (Allah) held back their hands from you: so fear Allah. And on Allah let Believers put (all) their trust. 5:11
Remember in thy dream Allah showed them to thee as few: if He had shown them to thee as many, ye would surely have been discouraged, and ye would surely have disputed in (your) decision: but Allah saved (you) for He knoweth well the (secrets) of (all) hearts. And remember when ye met, He showed them to you as few in your eyes, and He made you appear as contemptible in their eyes: that Allah might accomplish a matter already enacted. For to Allah do all questions go back (for decision). O ye who believe! when ye meet a force, be firm, and call Allah in remembrance much (and often); that ye may prosper: And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere: 8:43-46
When the Believers saw the Confederate forces they said: "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger told us what was true." And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience. 33:22
[37] Of those who answered the call of Allah and the Messenger, even after being wounded, those who do right and refrain from wrong have a great reward. Men said to them: "A great army is gathering against you, so fear them": but it (only) increased their Faith; they said: "For us Allah sufficeth, and He is the best disposer of affairs." And they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allah; no harm ever touched them: for they followed the good pleasure of Allah: and Allah is the Lord of bounties unbounded. It is only the Evil One that suggests to you the fear of his votaries: be ye not afraid of them, but fear Me, if ye have Faith. 3:174-175
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 9:5
Assuredly Allah did help you in many battle-fields and on the day of Hunain: behold! your great numbers elated you, but they availed you naught: the land, for all that it is wide, did constrain you, and ye turned back in retreat. 9:25
And if an entry had been effected to them from the sides of the (City), and they had been incited to sedition, they would certainly have brought it to pass, with none but a brief delay! 33:14
By the (Steeds) that run, with panting (breath), And strike sparks of fire, And push home the charge in the morning, And raise the dust in clouds the while, And penetrate forthwith into the midst (of the foe) en masse; 100:1-5
[38] It was not fitting for the people of Medina and the Bedouin Arabs of the neighbourhood, to refuse to follow Allah's Messenger, nor to prefer their own lives to his: because nothing could they suffer or do, but was reckoned to their credit as a deed of righteousness, - whether they suffered thirst, or fatigue, or hunger, in the Cause of Allah, or trod paths to raise the ire of the Unbelievers, or received any injury whatever from an enemy - for Allah suffereth not the reward to be lost of those who do good. Nor could they spend anything (for the Cause) - small or great - nor cut across a valley, but the deed is inscribed to their credit; that Allah may requite their deed with the best (possible reward). Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them, that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil). 9:120-122
[39] O ye who believe! take your precautions, and either go forth in parties or go forth all together. 4:71
When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers, for fear the unbelievers may attack you: for the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies. When thou (O Messenger) art with them, and standest to lead them in prayer, let one party of them stand up (in prayer) with thee, taking their arms with them; when they finish their prostrations, let them take their positions in the rear. And let the other party come up - which hath not yet prayed - and let them pray with thee, taking all precautions, and bearing arms: the Unbelievers wish, if ye were negligent of your arms and your baggage, to assault you in a single rush. But there is no blame on you if ye put away your arms because of the inconvenience of rain or because ye are ill; but take (every) precaution for yourselves. For the Unbelievers Allah hath prepared a humiliating punishment. When ye pass (congregational) prayers, celebrate Allah's praises, standing, sitting down, or lying down on your sides; but when ye are free from danger, set up regular prayers: for such prayers are enjoined on Believers at stated times. 4:101-103
[40] Allah's Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory; 48:18
[41] And that Allah may help thee with powerful help. It is He Who sent down Tranquillity into the hearts of the Believers, that they may add Faith to their Faith; for to Allah belong the Forces of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom; 48:3-4
[42] Let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, To him who fighteth in the cause of Allah - whether he is slain or gets victory - soon shall We give him a reward of great (value). 4:74
[43] Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission were about to annihilate your enemy, until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the Booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you. But He forgave you: for Allah is full of grace to those who believe. 3:152
They ask thee concerning (things taken as) spoils of war. Say: "(Such) spoils are at the disposal of Allah and the Messenger: so fear Allah, and keep straight the relations between yourselves: obey Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe." 8:1
And know that out of all the booty that ye may acquire (in war), a fifth share is assigned to Allah, and to the Messenger, and to near relatives, orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer, if ye do believe in Allah and in the revelation We sent down to our Servant on the Day of Testing, the Day of the meeting of the two forces. For Allah hath power over all things. 8:41
It is not fitting for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war until he hath thoroughly subdued the land. Ye look for the temporal goods of this world; but Allah looketh to the Hereafter: and Allah is Exalted in might, Wise. Had it not been for a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe penalty would have reached you for the (ransom) that ye took. But (now) enjoy what ye took in war, lawful and good: but fear Allah: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. O Prophet! say to those who are captives in your hands: "If Allah findeth any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." But if they have treacherous designs against thee, (O Messenger!), they have already been in treason against Allah, and so hath He given (thee) power over them. And Allah is He who hath (full) Knowledge and Wisdom. 8:67-72
Those who lagged behind (will say), when ye (are free to) march and take booty (in war): "Permit us to follow you." They wish to change Allah's decree: say: "Not thus will ye follow us: Allah has already declared (this) beforehand": then they will say, "But ye are jealous of us." Nay, but little do they understand (such things). Say to the desert Arabs who lagged behind: "Ye shall be summoned (to fight) against a people given to vehement war: then shall ye fight, or they shall submit. Then if ye show obedience, Allah will grant you a goodly reward, but if ye turn back as ye did before, He will punish you with a grievous Penalty." 48:15-16
[44] So lose not heart, nor fall into despair: for ye must gain mastery if ye are true in Faith. 3:139
O ye who believe! persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah; that ye may prosper. 3:200
O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day: that is best, and most suitable for final determination. 4:59
[45] O ye who believe! do your duty to Allah, seek the means of approach unto Him, and strive with might and main in His cause: that ye may prosper. 5:35
[46] Remember that morning thou didst leave thy household (early) to post the Faithful at their stations for battle; and Allah heareth and knoweth all things: 3:121
[47] When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers, for fear the unbelievers may attack you: for the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies. 4:101-103
[48] It is Allah Who made out of the things He created, some things to give you shade; of the hills He made some for your shelter; He made you garments to protect you from heat, and coats of mail to protect you from your (mutual) violence. Thus does He complete His favours on you, that ye may bow to His Will (in Islam). 16:81
[49] "There has already been for you a Sign in the two armies that met (in combat): one was fighting in the Cause of Allah, the other resisting Allah; these saw with their own eyes twice their number. But Allah doth support with His aid whom He pleaseth. In this is a warning for such as have eyes to see." 3:13
Remember that morning thou didst leave thy household (early) to post the Faithful at their stations for battle; and Allah heareth and knoweth all things: Remember two of your parties meditated cowardice; but Allah was their protector, and in Allah should the Faithful (ever) put their trust. Allah had helped you at Badr, when ye were a contemptible little force; then fear Allah; thus may ye show your gratitude. Remember thou saidst to the Faithful: "Is it not enough for you that Allah should help you with three thousand angels (specially) sent down? "Yea, if ye remain firm, and act aright, even if the enemy should rush here on you in hot haste, your Lord would help you with five thousand angels making a terrific onslaught." Allah made it but a message of hope for you, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except from Allah, the Exalted, the Wise: That He might cut off a fringe of the Unbelievers or expose them to infamy, and they should then be turned back, frustrated of their purpose. 3:121-127
O ye who believe! If ye will aid (the cause of) Allah, He will aid you, and plant your feet firmly. But those who reject (Allah), for them is destruction, and (Allah) will render their deeds astray (from their mark). That is because they hate the Revelation of Allah; so He has made their deeds fruitless. 47:7-9
[1] Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith fight in the cause of Evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan.
[1] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevails justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do. 8:39
[1] And many gains will they acquire (besides): and Allah is Exalted in Power, Full of Wisdom. 48:19-21
[1] Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission were about to annihilate your enemy, until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the Booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you. But He forgave you: for Allah is full of grace to those who believe. 3:152
[1] And why should ye not fight in the cause of Allah and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? Men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help! 4:75
[1] And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female: ye are members, one of another; those who have left their homes, and were driven out therefrom, and suffered harm in My Cause, and fought and were slain, verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath - a reward from the Presence of Allah - and from His Presence is the best of rewards." 3:195
[1] (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, "Our Lord is Allah." Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. 22:40-41
[1] On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.
[1] O People of the Book! there hath come to you Our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary): There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book.
[1] And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them.
[1] The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter; Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:33-34
Do no mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on Him with fear and longing (in your hearts): for the Mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good. 7:56
[1] Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. 2:190
The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. 2:194
[1] The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree): but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah: for (Allah) loveth not those who do wrong. But indeed if any do help and defend themselves after a wrong (done) to them, against such there is no cause of blame. The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrong-doing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice: for such there will be a Penalty grievous. 42:40-42
[1] The prohibited month, for the prohibited month, and so for all things prohibited, there is the law of equality. If then any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress ye likewise against him. But fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who restrain themselves. 2:194
[1] We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) wrongdoers. 5:45
[1] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression.
[1] If the Unbelievers should fight you, they would certainly turn their backs; then would they find neither protector nor helper. 48:22
[1] And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression. 2:193
[1] Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith fight in the cause of Evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan. 4:76
[1] Others you will find that wish to gain your confidence as well as that of their people: every time they are sent back to temptation, they succumb thereto; if they withdraw not from you nor give you (guarantees) of peace besides restraining their hands, seize them and slay them wherever ye get them; in their case We have provided you with a clear argument against them. 4:91
[1] But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and taunt you for your Faith, fight ye the chiefs of Unfaith: for their oaths are nothing to them: that thus they may be restrained. Will ye not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and took the aggressive by being the first (to assault) you? Do ye fear them? Nay, it is Allah Whom ye should more justly fear, if ye believe! 9:12-13
[1] Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. 9:29
[1] The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve (in a year), so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred: that is the straight usage.
[1] To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged; and verily, Allah is Most Powerful for their aid; (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right, (for no cause) except that they say, "Our Lord is Allah." Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid His (cause); for verily Allah is Full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). 22:39-40
[1] And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good.
[1]Think not of those who are slain in Allah's Way as dead. 3:169-171
[1] Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place; but Him ye would not harm in the least. For Allah hath power over all things. 9:39
[1] Let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, To him who fighteth in the cause of Allah - whether he is slain or gets victory - soon shall We give him a reward of great (value). 4:74
[1] They said: "We are endued with strength, and given to vehement war: but the command is with thee; so consider what thou wilt command." 27:33
[1] They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): so take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (from what is forbidden).
[1] They said: "If he steals, there was a brother of his who did steal before (him)." But these things did Joseph keep locked in his heart, revealing not the secrets to them. He (simply) said (to himself): "Ye are the worse situated; and Allah knoweth best the truth of what ye assert!" 12:77
But any that gains a hearing by stealth, is pursued by a flaming fire, bright (to see). 15:18
[1] When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they divulge it. If they had only referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have tested it from them (direct). Were it not for the Grace and Mercy of Allah unto you, all but a few of you would have followed Satan. 4:83
[1] When thou lookest at them, their exteriors please thee; and when they speak, thou listenest to their words.
[1]Allah's Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory; 48:18
[1] O ye who believe!
[1] Of those who answered the call of Allah and the Messenger, even after being wounded, those who do right and refrain from wrong have a great reward.
[1] It was not fitting for the people of Medina and the Bedouin Arabs of the neighbourhood, to refuse to follow Allah's Messenger, nor to prefer their own lives to his: because nothing could they suffer or do, but was reckoned to their credit as a deed of righteousness, - whether they suffered thirst, or fatigue, or hunger, in the Cause of Allah, or trod paths to raise the ire of the Unbelievers, or received any injury whatever from an enemy - for Allah suffereth not the reward to be lost of those who do good. 9:120-122
[1] O ye who believe! take your precautions, and either go forth in parties or go forth all together.
[1] Allah's Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquillity to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory; 48:18
[1] And that Allah may help thee with powerful help. It is He Who sent down Tranquillity into the hearts of the Believers, that they may add Faith to their Faith; for to Allah belong the Forces of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom; 48:3-4
[1] Let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, To him who fighteth in the cause of Allah - whether he is slain or gets victory - soon shall We give him a reward of great (value). 4:74
[1] So lose not heart, nor fall into despair: for ye must gain mastery if ye are true in Faith.
[1] O ye who believe! do your duty to Allah, seek the means of approach unto Him, and strive with might and main in His cause: that ye may prosper. 5:35
[1] Remember that morning thou didst leave thy household (early) to post the Faithful at their stations for battle; and Allah heareth and knoweth all things: 3:121
[1] When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers, for fear the unbelievers may attack you: for the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies. 4:101-103
[1] It is Allah Who made out of the things He created, some things to give you shade; of the hills He made some for your shelter; He made you garments to protect you from heat, and coats of mail to protect you from your (mutual) violence. Thus does He complete His favours on you, that ye may bow to His Will (in Islam). 16:81
[1] "There has already been for you a Sign in the two armies that met (in combat): one was fighting in the Cause of Allah, the other resisting Allah; these saw with their own eyes twice their number.
